When you send an SMS message, your mobile phone usually displays ‘message sent’. This however does not mean that SMS has been successfully delivered to intended recipient. It only means that SMS message has been successfully delivered to SMS message centre.

When you send an SMS, it is first delivered to an SMS message centre. It is then delivered from message centre to intended recipient’s mobile phone if it can be located on network. If intended recipient’s handset is off or out of network coverage, the SMS message will be stored for a limited duration at the message centre or until recipient’s phone is located on network, whichever comes first.
If for any reason the limited duration allowed for SMS storage elapses before intended recipient comes into network coverage area the SMS will be deleted and hence will not be received by the intended recipient, although ‘message sent’ may have been displayed when SMS message was first sent.
This simply means that ‘message sent’ information is not enough to confirm that your text has been successfully delivered.
To get a more reliable confirmation report when an SMS is delivered or not delivered to intended recipient, you must activate SMS delivery report feature on your mobile phone.
SMS delivery report feature is a network-enabled feature that instructs the message centre to send back a report to sender’s mobile phone when SMS is successfully delivered to recipient’s handset. It will also send a report if SMS delivery fails. Once you receive a successful delivery report, you can be confident that your SMS has been delivered.
Most mobile phones in the market today come with SMS delivery report feature. However it is usually deactivated as a default. Hence, if you want delivery report feature you must first activate it. Most telecoms network operators in Nigeria support this feature.
Activating this feature depend on your handset. You need to browse through ‘messages’ menu of your phone and search for menu option for activating SMS delivery report feature. Look for menu options like ‘message settings’, ‘settings’, ‘setup’, ‘common setting’, ‘Text message setup’, and so on.
Inside any of these menu options search for ‘Delivery report’, ‘SMS Alert’ or any other similar phrase and activate the feature.
For example, to activate SMS delivery report feature in Nokia 1200 and Nokia 1208, select Menu > Messages > Message settings > Delivery report. Select Yes and press OK.
Activation of this feature enables you receive SMS delivery report each time you send a message. Note that a report will also be sent if message delivery fails.
