Technology Competence Initiative TCI is an initiative of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria ICAN to ensure that all chartered accountants in Nigeria have relevant information technology IT skills to make them valuable to modern organisation’s needs. Candidates for ICAN November 2011 exams can register for TCI training.
TCI is now compulsory for all professional accounting students up to induction. ICAN TCI can be taken before or after passing ICAN professional exams. ICAN have authorised some training institutes to offer TCI to all prospective ICAN Inductees. You must attend the mandatory TCI in an authorised centre for it to be recognised by ICAN.

Information Technology has changed the way businesses and organisations operate. Organisations are beginning to see the benefits of IT in businesses and now demand relevant IT skills from all prospective employees. TCI is aimed at providing ICAN accountants with relevant IT skills.
Information technology has also changed the way accountants work. The computer with intuitive accounting and audit software packages have replaced pen, paper and adding machine as the tool sets of modern and next generation accountants.
Accounting software packages like Tally, Peachtree, Busy business, DacEasy, ATACC and so on are now daily companions of most modern accountants. Audit software like ACL is also popular in today’s work place. Modern accountants also make use of office productivity tools like word processor, spreadsheets and presentation software daily. TCI will put ICAN accountant through these relevant software tools.
To be relevant in the modern workplace accountants must be skilled in the use of computer, office productivity tools and accounting/auditing software packages. This is why TCI scheme of ICAN is commendable.
ICAN TCI is divided into two modules:
- TCI Module I: Computer fundamentals
- TCI Module II: Use of accounting packages
ICAN Inductees must complete the two TCI modules.
The total cost of ICAN TCI training programme may vary from one centre to another. Price of TCI module I is about N15,000 while price of TCI module II is N7,500. However other costs like registration fee, lunch and lecture material may bring total price to up to N30,000. Some training centres may also include an optional third TCI module on Use of Audit Software at N7,500 or N15,000. You will usually pay a TCI registration fee of N2,000. Note that ICAN TCI fees quoted may not include 5% VAT.
