If you live in Enugu, you can now enjoy free wireless internet courtesy of collaboration between the Enugu state government and Zinox Telecoms. The wireless internet service called Coal City super Wi-Fi will be available free for the first 3 months. After the initial 3 months Enugu state government promises to subsidise access cost to Coal City WiFi in order to make it affordable to Enugu residents.
Today accessing Wi-Fi in cyber cafes in Enugu currently costs about N200 per hour. It is hoped that after the 3 month free period access cost to Coal City Wi-Fi will be cheaper than cyber cafe figures. It is also hoped that bulk hour packages will be available then.
Subscription is required before one can access Coal City wireless internet. You can subscribe to Coal City super Wi-Fi at Community Resource Centre, CRC, opposite Okpara Square, before WAEC bus stop, Independence layout, Enugu. There you will have to fill a form, after which you will be given a username, password, and/or PIN for accessing the wireless network.
The simplest way to access Coal City Wi-Fi, is with a laptop with built-in WiFi. However if your laptop or notebook does not have built-in Wi-Fi, you can use a wireless notebook adapter to access CoalCity super Wi-Fi.
You can also use a wireless internet USB modem or a mobile phone with built-in Wi-Fi to access Coal City wireless internet. Price of wireless USB modem is currently 6,000 NGN in Enugu.
Desktop computers usually do not have built-in Wi-Fi, so if you have a desktop PC you will need some device to connect you to wireless internet. A Wireless internet PCMCIA card can be used to connect your desktop PC to wireless hotspots. The Wi-Fi PCMCIA card will be installed inside your system. You will need to have at least one vacant expansion slot on your system. Cost of Wi-Fi PCMCIA cards stand at about N6,000 in Enugu.
A Wi-Fi USB modem can also be used to connect your desktop or laptop to Coal City Wi-Fi. Simply connect the wireless USB modem to the USB port on your computer or laptop and you will be able to access wireless internet. Cost of Wi-Fi USB modems stands at about 6,000 Naira in Enugu.
You can also use a mobile phone as modem for accessing wireless internet. However, the mobile phone must have built-in Wi-Fi. With a mobile phone with built-in Wi-Fi, you can connect your desktop or notebook to wireless internet or you can use the phone to connect directly.
Some mobile phones with built-in Wi-Fi include, Nokia ESeries range Nokia E71, Nokia E65, Nokia E90, Nokia E51, Samsung Omnia i900, BlackBerry, and Sony Ericsson G900.
Cost of Wi-Fi wireless cards and modems is about 6,000 NGN. You can subscribe to Coal City super Wi-Fi at Community Resource Centre, CRC, opposite Okpara Square, before WAEC bus stop, Independence layout, Enugu.
