A lot of movement have been seen in internet access cost in Nigeria since our last report three months ago in August. The GSM companies (specifically MTN and Glo) seems to be most active in this area with all GSM networks now offering affordable N1,000 monthly internet bundles. We have also seen cost fall in the high data segment with Glo and MTN now offering more bandwidth even at a lower price.
Cheap Internet Access
As at August, 2010 only Zain and Etisalat were offering affordable 24/7 internet at N1,000 per month. Glo and MTN has since introduced their N1,000 monthly internet bundles. While MTN introduced a package similar to the existing N1,000 internet bundle, offering 100MB bandwidth limit, Glo mobile took things further, offering 150MB bandwidth limit (50% more value than industry standard).
9Mobile 4.5GB remains our pick for the best deal for cheap internet access in Nigeria. It offers 500MB data for N3,000. However, if your monthly data needs is less than 300MB, the Glo 150MB will be more appropriate offering you 300MB for N2,000.

Value for money Internet Access
The competition between MTN and Glo has led to price drops and more value for consumers. MTN took the first move (maybe in anticipation of a move by Glo). MTN dropped price of its 24/7 30-day internet bundle to N8,000 from N10,000 (a 20% reduction).
It also increased the bandwidth limit to 5GB from 3GB (a 66.7% increase). With this MTN 24/7 internet bundle now scores N1.60/MB, making it the third cheapest high data rate internet bundle in Nigeria. Glo mobile responded swiftly dropping price of its 24/7 30-day internet bundle to N7,500 from N10,000 (a 25% reduction).
Glo in order to stay ahead also increased the bandwidth limit to 6GB from 5GB (a 20% increase). These now makes Glo 24/7 30-day internet bundle the cheapest high data rate internet bundle in Nigeria with a score of N1.25/MB.
MultiLinks 6GB internet has been dethroned to second position. So, Glo Always Max is our pick for users with high data needs, especially if you are on 3G coverage. Because Glo Always Max is just N7,500 it also made our mid-range value for money category.
