Business & Internet: The Going Online Series

Going online is a decision that every business will have to take someday. Online presence is a good sign of a serious business. However, some businesses equate being online to just having a website.

A website is a good step and should be the headquarters of your online presence, but is hardly enough.

Connecting your business online gives you access to lots of online tools that will enable you promote and market your product and services and put your business in front of hundreds of potential customers who may never have known about your brand.

In this going online series we will be analysing the cost and rewards of a business having an online presence. We will also look at various ways of growing your business with the internet.

Be informed before going Online

A lot of businesses go online in ignorance. They hear the fairy tale story of the internet giving them access to millions of potential customers and they jump right in without asking any questions.

Being online is important, but you should know why you are doing it. You should also know the cost of succeeding online and the benefits in it for your business.

A number of businesses in Nigeria for example, build websites without knowing that a website needs to be updated from time to time.

Some do not even know that they have to pay for web hosting and domain name registration annually. Spending money on search engine optimisation, SEO, or online advertising is like rocket science to them. They just cannot get it.

This is probably why a lot of business websites are never updated. They are left just the way the web designer (who in most cases will never receive full payment for his/her web design work) left it until the hosting plan runs out.

Even businesses that manage to pay for their domain name, hosting, and other cost of being online promptly, do not fully leverage their online presence.

Many businesses have websites just because other businesses do. Most are not yet serious with social media, SEO, online directories, location/maps services, mobile optimisation, online marketing, e-commerce, apps, etc.
