Cost of Internet Access in Nigeria April 2012

Best Freelancers to help you Grow your Business

Very few changes where witnessed in the cost of internet access in Nigeria for the first quarter of 2012. In our last report, we speculated that the cost of internet access could increase due to the over 100% hike in petrol prices. That did not happen. Prices have remained relatively the same throughout the quarter.

Perhaps Airtel gave us the highlight of the quarter with its introduction of 3.75G high speed internet in major towns and cities in Nigeria. The launch also witnessed the introduction of new internet bundles by Airtel. However, none of the new Airtel internet bundles particularly stood out for us as they seem to be targeted at bringing Airtel at par with other networks rather than setting new internet pricing records.

MTN Opera Mini was also another notable highlight of the quarter, though MTN did not offer any new internet plans. Zoom Mobile revamped their internet access plans in the quarter introducing faster internet access. However customers who would want to experience the faster speed will have to pay more, making Zoom Mobile the only network in our radar to increase its cost of internet access in the quarter.

Although Glo mobile has not revamped its internet bundles for four straight quarters it still offers some of the sweetest internet browsing bundles in the industry and has remained a leader. Glo 200MB shares our top recommendation for internet browsing on feature phones and data efficient smartphones with Etisalat. Glo 1GB priced at N3,000, Glo 3GB priced at N5,000, and Glo 6GB priced at N7,500 are all very appetising.

Cheap Internet Access

Except for the new bundles introduced by Airtel the cheap internet category remained the same. Visafone’s 1.2GB internet browsing bundle priced at N3,000 remains our best pick for best deal for cheap internet browsing in Nigeria and 1GB internet plans from Glo and Airtel your best priced bundles if you are using a GSM/WCDMA(3G) phone, tablet, or modem.

Glo Always Micro (200MB) and Etisalat 200MB bundle both priced at N1,000 are still your best choice for browsing especially for feature phones and data efficient smartphones.

High data, Value for money Internet Access

Not much changed in this segment during the quarter. Glo Always Max, a 6GB 30-day internet access bundle priced at N7,500 (N1.25/MB) is still our best pick for high data users, especially if you are under a Glo 3.5G coverage area.

Swift Networks 150GB internet plan priced at N130,000 and the Visafone 15GB priced at N13,000 are still the best value internet bundles in Nigeria for high data users with a score of N0.87/MB. Other value internet plans include Glo 20GB priced at N18,000 (N0.90/MB) and Swift Business plan (80GB) priced at N75,000 (N0.93/MB).
