Paying more for products online rather than in the store may not seem so unusual for most customers, but it might be surprising that an Apple user may pay more for the products they buy online when compared with a PC owner. Why is this the case? It’s another example of the increasing amount of data companies have about consumers that they are using to thief benefit.
It’s not a secret that Apple computers and devices will cost a user much more than a similarly loaded PC or most other smartphones, but some Apple fans prefer to make their purchases based upon a Mac’s styling and is usability even without add-ons. Apple consumers are likely to have more resources (finances) than the typical PC users and other companies are aware of this.
The Orbitz Model
Not long ago, travel site Orbitz admitted it targets Mac users differently than it does its visitors on PCs. It has found that Mac users are willing to pay more for hotels, particularly those that receive higher ratings.
While Orbitz might show a PC visitor more economically priced hotel rooms at the top of a related search, it is more likely to present an Apple user with more expensive rooms. Though not all Apple owners are buying their computers just for the sake of style or convenience, a lot are, and that has placed them into a specific demographic that online retailers can take advantage of.
In the same way that sites track purchases with the use of cookies, they can trace whether a user owns a PC or a Mac.These retailers can then target search results so that more expensive items–whether for the sake of functional or frivolous add-ons–items appear on top, since an Apple owner is more likely to pay that extra cost.
It’s Not All the Retailer’s Fault
Naturally, a mere theory that Apple owners are willing to pay more isn’t enough to make online businesses like Orbitz draft a Mac-targeting business plan. Apple owners have to establish a pattern of behavior that would lead a company to think they are willing to spend more.
Some of the added expense may be a matter of taste, like not wanting black or gray peripherals to clash with the white and chrome of a Mac, and others may be the owners seeking out a bit of simplicity, like not knowing enough about how to properly select upgrades and add-ons on a PC to equal what comes standard on a Apple Mac.
There may also be the simple fact that a PC owner is not able to afford a Mac, which is why it is wiser to show more economic items.
