A New Asha Software Platform

According to Nokia’s press statement announcing the launch of the Nokia Asha 501 “The handset pushes the boundaries of affordable smartphone design with bold color, a high-quality build and an innovative user interface”.

Nokia Asha 501 features the new Nokia Asha software platform, which is a result of Nokia’s acquisition of Smarterphone in 2012. The new Asha software platform is designed to offer a good user experience at affordable price and if it works well, I expect this to be a nightmare for cheap Android phones and Samsung Rex.

Nokia Asha 501 comes with two home screens that makes it easy for you to access what you want faster. One is the Home, which is just the traditional home screen you are accustomed to on your smartphone with icons for launching apps as well as notifications and commands.

The other is Fastlane, which according to Nokia provides a record of how the phone is used, giving people a glimpse of their past, present and future activity, and helping them multi-task by providing easy access to their favourite apps and features. Fastlane is inspired by the swipe motion gestures of the Nokia N9.

Nokia Asha 501 will be pre-loaded with a new content app called Nokia Xpress Now that recommends content based on location, preferences and trending topics. Nokia Asha 501 will also come pre-loaded with Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Foursquare, Linkedin with an offer of 40 Free EA Games for you to download and keep forever from the Nokia Store.

Nokia’s location platform, HERE, will also be available for download on the Nokia Asha 501 from Q3, 2013.

Nokia Asha 501 has a 3.0-inch capacitive touch display with multi-touch support and 320 x 240 pixels resolution. On the rear-side is a 3.2 megapixels camera with QVGA video recording.

Dual-SIM or Single-SIM

Nokia Asha 501 is the cheapest Nokia phone to feature a micro-SIM and may actually signal that the end is near for the mini-SIM. It will be available in two variants; a single SIM variant and a dual-SIM variant that comes with Easy-Swap, a technology that enables you swap your secondary SIM without switching-off the phone.

Nokia Asha 501 supports 2G internet (GPRS/EDGE), but with Nokia Xpress Browser you will enjoy fast internet and cost savings, thanks to Nokia’s cloud compression. Nokia is also partnering with Facebook, Airtel, and MTN to offer access to Facebook free on Nokia Asha 501 for a limited time.
