Skype Translator – Real-time Natural Language Translator from Microsoft

Microsoft recently demoed a new app called the Skype Translator that offers near real-time language translation for people chatting in different languages. The Skype Translator bridges the language barrier as you no-longer need to learn a new language to communicate with people who speak a foreign language. It is a game changer with great potential in education, business, tourism, and relationships. Skype Translator will be available in beta for Windows 8 before the end of the year.

The Future is Here

Skype translator is huge because it solves a very important problem. It makes communications easy. The beauty is that it does not just offer text translation, it voices the translation in natural speech so you can hear the translation in your own language.

So, lets say you have a potential investor who is comfortable in German and you in English. Skype Translator allows both of you to speak in the language you are comfortable with (i.e. you in English and him in German). Skype Translator will serve as a translator in-between translating in near real-time the conversation.

Gurdeep Pall, corporate vice president of Skype said the latest feature was a result of “decades of work”. He further said that Microsoft have invested in “speech recognition, automatic translation and machine learning technologies for more than a decade, and now they’re emerging as important components in this more personal computing era”.

It is not clear for now if Skype translator will be a standalone app or built into the Skype app. I think it makes more sense as an add-on feature on the Skype. Such a move will make the Skype app more compelling and leave competitors like BBM, Whatsapp, and Viber flat-footed.
