The HTC One M8 Eye is rightly named after its months-old ancestor, the HTC One M8 (as it should be). The HTC One M8 Eye comes with much of the hardware that we’ve seen in the HTC One M8: a 5-inch, liquid crystal Gorilla Glass 3 display with a screen resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixel, a 2.26Ghz quad-core, Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor with 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal memory storage with a microSD card slot.

It also comes with a 2,600mAh battery, and runs on Android 4.4.4 (KitKat) with HTC’s Sense 6.0 UI, known as “Sixth Sense” (at the very least, perhaps 6.x), on top.

HTC retains the 5MP HD front camera on the One M8 Eye that the company placed on the original HTC One M8, but has brought along two new surprises to the One M8 experience. We detail these below.

HTC brings 13MP back camera to the One M8 Eye

The HTC One M8, announced in March, featured HTC’s 4-megapixel “UltraPixel” camera that hasn’t done so well with photographers and consumers. HTC decided to revamp its back camera in the HTC One M8 Eye and emerge with a 13MP camera (no UltraPixel technology) to provide larger images up-close.

According to some early One M8 Eye reviews, HTC’s back camera still has an overexposure problem that appeared first on the One M8 announced eight months ago, leading to pixelated images when zooming. Still, you should find the quality of the images to have some improvement over the back camera of its predecessor.

Borrows from Desire Eye

We have some idea as to why HTC named its One M8 follow-up the “One M8 Eye”. The Taiwanese manufacturer recently announced the HTC Desire Eye that brings back all the things you loved about the Desire smartphone but provides more camera software for selfies than you’ve ever seen on an HTC smartphone. The company took the new “Eye” camera experience and brought it to the HTC One M8 Eye.

HTC One M8 Eye offers the full Eye camera software experience, which consists of a few modes: Auto and Voice Selfies, Group Video Face Tracking, Split Capture, Crop Me In, Face Fusion, and Live Makeup and Photo Booth effects. Voice Selfies let you use voice command to take self portraits, while Face Tracking allows your face to remain in zoom while in group video chats. Split Capture lets you in on a special moment, even if you’re taking a photo.

Crop Me In lets you place yourself in any photo, whether or not you were ever in the original moment. Face Fusion gets playful with combining two faces into one. Live Makeup provides a “touch-up” to the photo before you take the shot, and Photo Booth creates four photos that run in a single image, reminding you of the old Photo Booth photos of days gone by.

The HTC One M8 Eye is running Android 4.4.4 KitKat now but will receive an update to Android 5.0 Lollipop by March 2015. As an update to the original One M8, but with added selfie photography, it’s worth the buy.
