Nigeria’s leading e-commerce site Konga has taken the veil off its own unique payment solution called KongaPay, which looks set to redefine the e-commerce and online shopping scene in the country.
The new payment solution was first rumoured few months back after Konga advertised for the position of a KongaPay manager. The local e-commerce giant finally launched the payment solution recently at a low-key event.
About KongaPay
This payment gateway is designed to enable Konga customers pay seamlessly on the site. It eliminates the need for customers to enter their card details each time they are making purchases online.
All you need to start using the KongaPay service is an active local bank account and a registered phone number. After set-up, which includes entering your name, phone number, bank details and date of birth, you only need a one-time PIN to complete all transactions you will be making from then on.
For every purchase, your bank will send you a one-time code via SMS to your registered mobile phone, which you must enter to authorise the purchase.
The payment solution will even support one-click refunds for orders that are cancelled. KongaPay is the result of partnerships between Konga and several Nigerian banks.
AliPay, a payment gateway created by Alibaba, is obviously the inspiration for KongaPay. That payment solution has been instrumental to the success of the leading Chinese e-commerce store and facilitates a significant portion of electronic payment transactions in China.
Konga, no doubt, wishes to replicate the success of AliPay with its own payment solution in Nigeria.
The operation of KongaPay is also somewhat similar to GTPay, which Konga already supports for its customers banking with Guarantee Trust Bank.
The main difference between the two payment solutions is the fact that KongaPay does not require users to be using internet banking services, unlike GTPay which needs an internet banking token to be entered to complete transactions.
KongaPay is a potential game-changer on the e-commerce and online shopping space in Nigeria and looks set to test the resilience of Interswitch. It will be available to customers from July starting with the Konga marketplace, but we will not be surprised KongaPay begis to showup in other online stores and ecommerce websites in Nigeria.
