Details of the upcoming Microsoft Lumia 940 and its larger variant, the Lumia 940 XL, have continued to filter out — even though their maker has kept such information to itself so far. Microsoft however launched the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL instead.

It was speculated that the new devices will bring some interesting features that were not available in their predecessor, the Lumia 930 along with upgrades. However, the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL was launched instead.
Card Slot and Iris Scanner
The new Microsoft Lumia 940 and Lumia 940 XL are speculated to be coming several new and upgraded features. Among the most notable of these are a microSD card slot and an iris scanner.
One of the complaints some users had about the Lumia 930 is that it failed to provide means of adding extra storage to the 32GB inbuilt storage on the device. Microsoft is expected to oblige to buyers’ wish of having a microSD card slot on the new Lumia 940 devices.
Also, the new smartphones, especially the Microsoft Lumia 940 XL is rumoured to feature an iris scanner for improved device security through biometric authentication with an eye scan. This will be a significant leap in user protection if it turns out to be true.
About a year ago, it was rumoured that the Galaxy S5 will feature Iris scan, which later turned out to be false. Lets hope this one from Microsoft ends up being true.
Lumia 940
According to the website WinFuture, the Microsoft Lumia 940 will likely feature an aluminium frame and polycarbonate rear. It is expected to sport a 5.2-inch display with a Quad HD resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels.
The site also claims, the Lumia 940 will be powered by a 6-cores Snapdragon 808 processor, with juice supplied by a 3,000mAh battery. But some other sources say the device will be driven by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor with Adreno 420 GPU. It will have 3 GB of RAM and come in different storage versions.
Lumia 940 XL
NokiaPowerUser reported that the larger Microsoft Lumia 940 XL will show off a svelte profile with metallic frame and unibody design. It will cram in a large 5.7-inch display with the same Quad HD resolution as the smaller variant.
The device will be powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor with Adreno 430 graphics processor. It is expected to pack 3 GB of RAM and internal storage memory of 32 GB.
In addition to the mentioned iris scanner, the Lumia 940 XL is rumoured to support Continuum for Phones, USB Type-C & Dual-Role, and a native pen. WinFuture indicated the device will be armed with a 3,300mAh battery.
The rear cameras of the devices will likely be bumped to 24-25 megapixels, while the front-facing shooter will be a 5-megapixel or higher sensor, according to NokiaPowerUser.
