The Design
Lenovo’s Carbon Series machines are not known to be really cheap – the design and build of the ThinkPad X1 Carbon (3rd Gen) give an idea of why that is so. It is constructed using premium carbon fibre polymer and magnesium alloy, giving a rugged and sturdy look, while showing off a matte finish.
In spite of the type of materials used for its construction, it weighs just slightly over 1 kg and is interestingly slim. It packs a six-row, LED-backlit keyboard to facilitate typing in dark settings.
The Display
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon features a 14-inch display with both touch and non-touch configurations. Buyers get to choose from three display options, including Full HD TN (1920 x 1080 pixels) and Quad HD (2560 x 1440 pixels).
The anti-glare display makes for brighter images and clearer texts to ensure using the ultrabook is less tasking on the eye. It also has optional multi-touch technology.
Performance
The ultrabook is decked out to deliver performance level somewhat commensurate with the price it commands. You get 5th-gen Intel Core processor (up to Core i7) with up to 3.2 GHz processing speed on the ThinkPad X1 Carbon (3rd Gen).
The CPU is backed by either 4 GB or 8 GB of RAM for a significantly responsive laptop and seamless multitasking. Graphics is taken care of by onboard Intel HD Graphics 5500, which offers performance improvement over the Intel HD Graphics 4400 GPU.
Additional Information
Zippy solid-state drives of up to 512GB capacity are supplied for storage on the ultrabook. The operating system used is Windows 8.1 (64 bit), with Windows 7 Professional available through downgrade rights from Windows 8.1 Pro (64 bit).
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon features an HD webcam, dual-array microphone, two USB 3.0 ports, a Mini DP port and a 50Wh battery rated to deliver almost 11 hours of use.
