Nest Learning Thermostat has come a long way in terms of design and features since making its first appearance a few years back. The latest, third generation model comes with a bigger display and is better equipped to help you save energy, and money.
The Design
The third generation Learning Thermostat features a sleek and attractive design. It has the same rounded look of the earlier-generation models of the thermostat with a dial made of stainless steel.
The device packs an improved display, which is 40 percent bigger than its predecessor. According to Nest, the display has an improved pixel density of 229 pixel per inch – 25 percent more than was the case with the previous iteration.
The display can be set to show an analogue or digital clock or the current room temperature. In spite of its bigger display, the Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd Gen) shows off a slimmer profile.
The Features
In addition to the near-field sensors that were provided on the previous generation thermostats, Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd Gen) comes with a far-field sensor which supports a new feature called ‘Farsight.’
This feature lets you see the current time or room temperature from a distance, if your sight is that sharp. Before now, you would have needed to stand before the display before it lights up for you to see this information.
There is another new feature on 3rd generation Nest Learning Thermostat known as ‘Furnace Heads-Up.’ This characteristic is useful to users with heating and forced-air furnace systems in their homes.
Many heating and forced-air furnaces are designed to automatically shut off when overheating is detected. Furnace Heads-Up keeps track of shutoff patterns to help you detect any issues in your heating system. The thermostat sends alerts to your smartphone or tablet.
Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd Gen) generates a monthly Home Report giving you idea of energy use in your home. The Nest app for the thermostat is compatible with devices running on Android and iOS platforms, allowing you to control settings from anywhere you have access to cellular or Wi-Fi connection.
