The Design
In terms of design, the DJI Phantom 3 Advanced looks a lot like its predecessor Phantom 2 Vision+, which the Phantom 3 Professional also bears resemblance to. It features a base-mounted camera and four pylons, each featuring a rotor.
The main visible difference between this edition and the Professional model is that the former has silver stickers on its self-tightening propeller struts while the latter uses gold.
The same three-axis gimbal seen on the Phantom 3 Professional is also available here to enable you keep the drone stable when the integrated camera is subjected to sudden movements or wind gusts.
The quadcopter also comes with an intuitive handheld transmitter (radio controller) for powering on and off, capturing images and start and stopping video recording, amongst others.
Video and Photo Quality
The camera department is where DJI Phantom 3 Advanced differs significantly from the Phantom 3 Professional. Unlike in the case of the other more-expensive drone, this one lacks the capability to record 4K videos.
It is fitted with a 12-megapixel Sony camera with an improved f/2.8 lens, with video recording capability peaking at 2.7K or 2704 x 1520 pixels. The maximum video quality is still an improvement on the Phantom 2 Vision+, which recorded up to Full HD (1080p) videos. The video quality offered may not make an upgrade to the dearer Phantom 3 Professional really worth it.
The shooter on DJI Phantom 3 Advanced has a narrower field of view of 94 degrees – compared to the 140 degrees of the Phantom 2 Vision+ ̶ for significantly less distortion in image quality.
It also captures still images of up to 12-megapixel resolution. The use of Lightbridge technology, equally present on the Phantom 3 Professional, makes for improved image transmission from the sky to the ground and enables direct live video streaming to YouTube.
Additional Spec Information
The Phantom 3 Advanced offers a flight simulator as well to enable first-timers hit the ground running in no time by first familiarizing themselves with the app and controls before the real flying.
The DJI Pilot app works with iOS devices such as iPhones as well as select Android devices. It can be used for auto-takeoff and for viewing HD (720p) version of the footage being recorded. You can also share recorded footage on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.
Like in the case of its higher-end brother, DJI Phantom 3 Advanced uses a GPS-based navigation system for the maintenance of flight stability and support of other capabilities, including auto-landing at the same spot from which the quadcopter took off.
And in the event of the drone’s running low on battery or losing signal, a ‘return-to-home’ feature is set off and the quadcopter will fly in a straight-line path to a previously-defined position where it will land and power off.
The consumer drone features a vision positioning system which uses a special camera and sonic waves to perform similar stability function GPS performs in an outdoor environment when indoors or flying the unmanned aerial vehicle close to the ground. DJI Phantom 3 Advanced is equipped with a rechargeable 6000mAh Li-Po battery.
