PiMax 8K VR is an upgrade of the PiMax 4K VR. A prototype of the high resolution VR HMD was first showcased at CES 2017. The major highlight of the PiMax 8K VR headset are the ultra-wide 200° field of vision and the high resolution view that delivers 3840 x 2160 resolution per eye to give an immersive experience.

About the VR Headset
The PiMax 8K VR is an upgrade to the earlier PiMax 4K VR in two major ways. While the 4K VR headset offers 1920 x 2160 per eye, the new 8K VR has 3840 x 2160 pixels per eye, which results in a sharper view. This means the view will not be pixelated, giving it a more immersive feel.
The second major upgrade, which also improves the level of immersion is the field of vision (FOV), which has been increased to 200° (the 4K VR offers 110°). This will make it feel almost like you are using your naked eye.
PiMax 8K VR uses a technology called brain-warp to deliver images to both eyes at 120Hz in-order to maintain acceptable low latency level for a VR headset. The VR headset beams 4K image to each eye at a time. This means that when one eye sees the 4K image, the other eye sees a blank screen, then this eye sees blank and the other eye sees a 4k image.
This fast switching of the 4K images between both eyes at a rate of 120Hz (120 times per second), creates an illusion that the brain interprets as a single super high resolution image.
However, rendering 4K images is not Child’s play. You will require a monster capability on your PC to do so. Think of two GeForce GTX 1070 graphics card or one GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card for a good experience.
PiMax 8K VR has a motion to photon (MTP) latency of 18 milliseconds, which is just within the 20ms limit for prevention of vertigo or dizziness on someone wearing a VR headset.
The major drawbacks being reported about the PiMax 8K VR are the low brightness display and headtracking latency.
