Surface Laptop is the first device in Microsoft’s Surface-line to offer a traditional laptop form-factor. The 13.5-inch laptop is not a 2-in-1 like the Surface Book. Microsoft is also using the launch of the Surface Laptop to unveil the Windows 10 S, a new variant of the Windows 10 operating system optimised for security and performance.

Design and Display

The Surface Laptop is thin and light and is designed with University/College students in mind according Microsoft’s Devices Chief, Panos Panay. It features a premium metal design available in Burgundy, Platinum, Cobalt Blue, Graphite Gold colours. The device promises 14.5 hours of use.

The keyboard is covered in a durable Alcantara material, which is soft to touch as well as spill and stain resistant. Surface Laptop offers Omnisonic Speakers with Dolby Audio Premium.

Surface Laptop sports a 13.5-inch PixelSense display. The brilliant touchscreen offers 2254 x 1504 pixels in 3:2 aspect ratio with support for the Surface Pen. The display is covered in Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

Performance

The Surface Laptop may have been built with college students in mind, but it comes with power and performance to make it attractive to most people. It is targeted at consumers who would normally buy the MacBook Pro or the Macbook from Apple.

Its promised 14.5 hours battery, which means it can handle a full day of work and still have enough to spare for your home entertainment. Surface Laptop is powered by 7th generation Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors. The entry-level model which starts at $999 offers Intel Core i5, 4GB RAM and 128GB SDD storage. You can also get a model with 8GB RAM and 256GB SDD storage for $1299.

For more performance, the Surface Laptop also offers Intel Core i7 with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage or 16GB RAM and 512GB SDD storage. The two models goes for $1599 and $2199 respectively. The Core i7 models also upgrades graphics chip from Intel HD 620 Graphics to Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640.

Surface Laptop is loaded with Windows 10 S, a new variant of the operating system that is optimised for security and performance. However, with Windows 10 S, you can only install Apps from the Windows Store. If you do not want to be limited to apps that are available in the Windows Store, you can upgrade to Windows 10 Pro.

Thankfully, Microsoft is offering free upgrade to Windows 10 Pro until December 31, 2017 for the Surface Laptop. You also get one year free subscription to the Office 365 Personal.

Ports and Connectivity

Surface Laptop features a USB 3.0 port and a Mini Display port. You also get a Surface Connect port, which means that if you buy the Surface Dock accessory, you will have access to more ports as well as turn your device to a desktop.

Surface Laptop supports dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 with LE.

Pricing and Availability

Pre-order has begun for the Surface Laptop in the United States. The price starts at $999. The Laptop will start shipping from June 15, 2017. We have no information about the pricing and availability of the Laptop in Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana. Surface Laptop price in Nigeria is expected to start at around 320,000 Naira, depending on your location and the configuration of the laptop.

Price in Ghana is expected to start at around GH₵ 3999. Surface Laptop price in Kenya starts at 106,999 KSh.
