Design and Build
As it is with many gaming laptops, the HP Omen X comes with a huge and clunky chassis. At a staggering 40mm thickness level and weight of 4.3kg, the Omen X doesn’t qualify to be called ‘portable’. The idea behind this chunk is however understandable as HP designed it that way on purpose to add more heat pipes for more effective cooling effect during gaming and to also house a colossal battery big enough to supply longer gaming hours.
Like the Omen 15 and Omen 17, the lid is made of anodized aluminum, patterned metal sheet and two LED strips that form the illuminated X logo. However, unlike its predecessors, the illumination pattern and colours of the logo can be customized. There a couple of ports on the rear-facing side of the Omen 17’s bottom chassis: HDMI 2.0, Gigabit Ethernet port, 2 USB-C ThunderBolt ports, a mini DisplayPort, and a single USB 3.1 port.
Other ports which includes two 3.5mm jack (for headphone and microphone), two more USB 3.1 ports and SD card reader are spread around the laptop.
Opening the lid reveals a full-size keyboard and touchpad. The keyboard is RGB-illuminated and sports keys that are comfortable not just for gaming, but for typing too. There are also special set of keys on the keyboards; six macro keys are placed, vertically, on the left side of the keyboard, and there’s an Omen-branded key that launches the Omen Command Centre app when clicked.
Display
The HP Omen X comes with a 17.3-inch screen. The display is an IPS panel with a Full HD (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) resolution, refresh rate of 120Hz, and G-Sync support. Be it for gaming or watching videos, you should expect nothing but excellent viewing angles and brilliant color reproduction. Brightness stands at about 333 cd/m² while display density measures is 127ppi (0.1995 x 0.1995 mm pixel pitch).
There’s an optional model of the Omen X with a 4K UHD IPS display panel with an even faster refresh rate of 144Hz.
Processor and Storage
The HP Omen X is powered by Intel’s Iatest generation of Kaby Lake CPU, the Core i7-7820HK. This processor comes with a total of four core and a clock speed of 2.9GHz which can reach up to 3.9GHz in Turbo Boost mode. Assisting the CPU is a the Nvidia GTX 1080, a powerful graphics unit with 8GB GDDR5 memory which will further boost clock speed, improve thermals and overall efficiency.
In terms of storage, what you get is 32GB of DDR4 RAM which is unlocked for overclocking and two SSD slots (with 1TB out-of-the-box) and 2TB of HDD.
Battery
The Omen X sports a 99Wh 6-cell battery out-of-the-box. And unlike professional and business laptops that can conveniently supply longer hours of usage time, gamers always wish they had it better, or equal at least. Unlike the Dell XPS 13 (2018) —a portable business notebook— that boasts of a stunning 21 hours of battery life, the maximum you can get out the HP Omen X is 4 hours. Could be shorter or longer, it all depends on how you use the device and the sort of games you play on it.
Price
While price varies according to display and storage configurations, the HP Omen X starts at about US$ 2270.
