In the continuation of its premium G series, LG has unveiled a new smartphone called the LG G8 ThinQ. It enters the market as the sequel to the last year’s released LG G7 ThinQ. Well, LG isn’t planning to get rid of the “ThinQ” affix just yet. This new device brings tonnes of fresh features that redefines the classy essence of an LG flagship smartphone. Chief among these features are the Palm Vein Recognition and Air Motion. Honestly, they are as exciting as their names appear.

Design and Display
Asides from the top-notch fixed on the phone’s top, you can ideally call the LG G8 ThinQ an almost bezel-less smartphone. Either redesigned or not, it’s hard to point out a manufacturer that hasn’t implemented the notch design in their smartphones. That’s me digressing. Back to the topic, Corning Gorilla Glass 5 encapsulates the smartphone on both sides leaving the aluminium frame in between.
A fingerprint reader is seen below the camera module at the phone’s back. In a period where the in-display fingerprint sensor is making waves, LG’s decision to opt out of the bandwagon might seem archaic. But then, the South Korean tech giant introduced something spectacular with regards to security (more on that later).
The large 6.1-inch AMOLED screen emits quality multimedia. The quality is delivered by the 1440 x 3120 pixels resolution and 564 ppi pixel density. With those figures alone, the phone’s display is superb, but you’ll be more amazed to find out there’s HDR10 and 100% DCI-P3 in the mix of things.
Besides, the OLED technology of the display paved the way for LG Crystal Sound OLED (CSO). This technology makes use of a piezoelectric transducer that vibrates to produce sounds like those from a speaker. Although that’s the main speaker on the device, there’s still the Boombox speaker at the base of the phone.
Battery and Camera
Being a high-quality edifice, a fitting 3,500mAh battery enters the scene to distribute power supply for an impressive timeframe. What’s more, the phone attains full capacity quickly due to the Quick Charge 3.0 (18W) supported by the chipset. And there’s the reverse charging advantage of the USB On-The-Go in case your secondary device is low on battery power.
The back camera configuration features a 12MP standard shooter equipped with f/1.5 aperture, as well as 16MP ultra-wide lens (f/1.9).
Z Camera
In seque, we’ll be looking at the front camera setup of LG G8 ThinQ called Z camera. The Z camera is composed of an 8MP sensor (f/1.7 aperture) and ToF camera similar to what Samsung Galaxy S10 5G possesses. As expected, the 8MP selfie shooter carries out its job description.
On the other hand, the ToF camera’s duties are more tasking. It handles three main actions – Face ID, Palm Vein Recognition and Air Motion. For the Face ID, the camera records an image of your face which you can use to lock and unlock the device whenever you want.
Also, the ToF sensor has the ability to record the patterns of your palm veins. Once registered, you can unlock the device by placing your palm on the sensor and slowly lifting it. Air Motion allows you to use air gestures to interact with the smartphone. Hence, you can play and pause music, call and reject calls especially when your hands are dirty.
Hardware and Software
LG went for the jugular vein with the Snapdragon 855 SoC that runs at the heart of the phone. The presence of this 7nm SoC equates to having the perfect graphics card – Adreno 640 GPU on board. It is paired with 6GB RAM for multitasking ease. An expandable 128GB ROM provides enough storage for you. Lastly, the Android 9.0 Pie OS oversees the software region of the phone.
LG G8 ThinQ Pricing and Availability
The price is to be around the region of 300, 000 Naira in online stores and smartphone retail centres around you depending on the deal.
