Design
At first glance, it is quite obvious that no major changes has been made in the design of the Surface Laptop 4 compare to its predecessor Surface Laptop 3. It still maintain the thin and light chassis for both 13.5″ and 15″.
The 13.5-inch models has an aluminum casing with Alcantara clothed material palm rest, and available in platinum or ice blue. The 15-inch models also has an aluminum casing with metal palm rest and available in matte black and platinum.
These laptops comes with a physical dimension of 308 mm x 223 mm x 14.5 mm for the 13.5″ and 339.5 mm x 244 mm x 14.7 mm for the 15″ model, hence, the light, portable yet durable design.
The smooth lid only has the window logo perfectly placed at the center. When opened, the lid house the large display with thin bezels around it. The top bezel helps host the 720p HD f2.0 camera which has the Windows Hello face authentication, thus serving as a security measure for privacy.
Furthermore, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 has a smooth, invisible hinge which hold th screen to the base and allows you to open the lid with one finger.
On the laptop base sit the high-quality keyboard and a glass surface trackpad which supports Windows 10 gestures. The keys are bold, and soft with the perfect travel distance to makes typing so much more comfortable. The keyboard also has a three-stage backlighting that makes it easy to see the keyboard even in low-light situations.
Microsoft also equipped the Laptop 4 with a robust set of connectivity features, including a USB-C, a USB-A connector, and a headphone jack on the left side.
Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 also has a magnetic Surface Connect port for PC charging on the right side. However, there is also support for a third-party portable battery pack to power up the Laptop 4, through the device’s USB-C connector.
Display
Like its predecessor, the Surface Laptop 4 comes with two display screen size option. This includes the 13.5-inch and 15-inch.
The screen retains Microsoft’s signature 3:2 aspect ratio, and the 2,496 x 1,664 resolution resulting into 201 PPI per density.
Similarly, the laptop uses the PixelSense display named for its capacitive touch and stylus capabilities. This display supports touch, and pen input.
The Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 also offers a brightness peaks at an average of 399 nits, thus, making it easy to use in the dark of night without being too bright.
Above all, this laptop comes with 10-point touch tracking, hence, the screens can handle simultaneous touches from all fingers on both hands, enabling a wide number of gestures and multi-touch controls.
Performance
The Surface Laptop 4 has different performance for the two display models. For the base screen model 13.5-inch Microsoft offer two quad Core Intel CPU model including the 11th Gen Intel Core i5-1135G7 or i7-1185G7 processor and an optional AMD Ryzen™ 5 4680U Mobile Processor.
The model equipped with the Intel CPU is backed up by Intel® Iris® Xe Graphics. While the model with AMD Ryzen mobile processor is supported by AMD Radeon Graphics Microsoft Surface® Edition (6 cores) with either 8GB or 16GB RAM option and up to 512GB SSD.
For the premium model with 15-inches display, Microsoft offer an option of a Quad Core 11th Intel® Core™ i7-1185G7 processor or AMD Ryzen™ 7 4980U Mobile Processor with Radeon™ Graphics Microsoft Surface® Edition (8 cores). These model comes with either a 16GB or 32GB RAM with up to 1TB SSD.

In the audio department, some changes has been made on the Surface Laptop 4, Microsoft added the Dolby Atmos technology, which it claims helps the laptop deliver richer, more spatially accurate sound by pumping it out from beneath the keyboard and bouncing it off the screen.
Microsoft also claims the AMD-equipped 13.5 Surface Laptop 4 can last up to 19 hours on a charge, while the Intel variant we reviewed is advertised as lasting up to 17 hours. However, the 15-inch model can last up to 17.5 hours of battery life on typical device usage.
