Design
Following the launch of the G22 earlier in 2023, Nokia is committed to providing consumers with devices that are easy, accessible, and affordable to repair at home. However, what sets the G42 apart from its predecessor is the integration of 5G connectivity, a feature that was missing in the Nokia G22.
The Nokia G42 aims to address the growing demand for repairable smartphones by offering users the ability to replace key components such as the screen, battery, and charging port. By partnering with the renowned repair community, iFixit, Nokia ensures that customers have access to the necessary parts and resources to perform repairs themselves.
At first glance, it is obvious that the Nokia G42 is a beauty on budget. Although when viewed from the rear it is somewhat similar to the G22, it impressive upgrade in the finishing and front design.
The Nokia G42 has a durable design made 60% recycled plastic, from the back to the frame holding the rear to the screen. It measures a dimension of 165 x 75.8 x 8.6 mm and weigh 193.8 g hence, its slightly heavy on hand.
At the front of the Nokia phone, there is a 6.56 inches glass screen display surrounded by slim bezels and a front facing camera. On the back, the Nokia G42 has a back cover made of 65% recycled material and it’s boxed in FSC-certified mixed packaging.
There is also a rectangular camera module that houses the triple-camera setup and an LED flash. The module is located at the top left corner of the device, and it has a silver ring beside it that gives it a premium look. The Nokia logo is placed at the center of the back panel. Above all, this phone is available in Gray, and Purple.
Display
First off, the display on the Nokia G42 is a 6.56-inch IPS LCD panel. It may not be the sharpest out there, with a resolution of 720 x 1612 pixels and a pixel density of around 269 ppi. However, the colors are vibrant, and the overall viewing experience is pretty decent. The 20:9 aspect ratio gives you a tall and immersive display, which is always a plus.
When it comes to the screen-to-body ratio, Nokia did a good job with this one. The G42 boasts an impressive 82.7% screen-to-body ratio, which means you get a lot of screen real estate to enjoy your content. It’s great for watching videos, browsing the web, or even gaming.
Another noteworthy feature is the 90Hz refresh rate. This is something you don’t usually find in this price range, and it definitely makes a difference. Scrolling through menus and apps feels smoother, and it adds a touch of fluidity to the overall user experience. Plus, the android phone supports a peak brightness of 560 nits, which means you won’t have any trouble using it outdoors under bright sunlight.
To keep the display protected, Nokia has included Corning Gorilla Glass 3. While it’s not the latest version, it still does a decent job of safeguarding the screen against scratches and minor drops. Of course, I would still recommend using a screen protector just to be on the safe side.
Camera
The Nokia G42 comes with a triple-camera setup on the back. The main camera is a 50-megapixel sensor with an aperture of f/1.8, which allows for better low-light performance and sharper images. It’s a wide-angle lens that captures a wider field of view, allowing you to fit more into your shots.
In addition to the main camera, there are two additional 2-megapixel sensors on the back. One is a macro lens that lets you get up close to capture fine details, such as the texture of objects or small subjects. The other is a depth sensor, which helps in creating portrait shots with a pleasing background blur, also known as the bokeh effect.
The camera features of the Nokia G42 include LED flash, HDR (High Dynamic Range) for better exposure in challenging lighting conditions, and panorama mode for capturing wide scenic shots. While it doesn’t support 4K video recording, it can shoot videos in 1080p resolution at 30 frames per second, which should be sufficient for most users’ needs.
Moving on to the front-facing camera, the Nokia G42 is equipped with a single 8-megapixel selfie camera. It should be capable of capturing decent self-portraits and can be used for video calls or online conferencing.
Hardware and Software
One of the standout features of the Nokia G42 is its operating system, Android 13. With Android 13, you get access to the latest features and improvements that Google has to offer. The UI is clean and user-friendly, and you can expect a smooth and intuitive experience navigating through the phone.
Under the hood, the Nokia G42 is powered by the Qualcomm SM4350-AC Snapdragon 480+ 5G chipset, built on an 8nm process. This processor provides a good balance between performance and power efficiency. The octa-core CPU consists of two Kryo 460 Gold cores clocked at 2.2 GHz and six Kryo 460 Silver cores clocked at 1.8 GHz. It handles day-to-day tasks with ease and provides a snappy user experience.
To enhance the gaming and graphical capabilities, the G42 is also equipped with the Adreno 619 GPU. This GPU delivers smooth graphics performance and ensures a good gaming experience, even for moderately demanding games. This is a decent gaming phone if you are looking for an affordable option.
In terms of memory, the Nokia G42 offers two options: an option of either 4GB or 6GB of RAM with 128GB internal storage which can be expanded further using a microSDXC card.
As for the battery, same as the Nokia G22, there is a 5,000 mAh battery that can charge at 20W. The company claims 3-day battery life on the device and is capable of 800 full charging cycles, meaning it will stay in good shape for longer. It will even maintain more than 80% of its original charge after the 800 cycles. With the PD3.0 fast charging technology, you can easily charge your device to full life within 2 hour.
For connectivity, this Nokia phone comes with 5G connectivity for fast internet speeds, as well as Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, and GPS. It also sports a USB Type-C Port (USB 2.0) for fast charging and wired communications.
