The Motorola Razr 50 series was unveiled and released to the flip foldable market in June 2024. It comes in two series: the Razr 50 and Razr 50 Ultra. While the vanilla version is more affordable than the Ultra model, it packs impressive features including a sleek design, a high-resolution display, and a robust camera system. The Motorola Razr 50 boasts a durable hinge mechanism, a vibrant OLED screen, and a capable processor that ensures smooth performance.

Design

The Motorola Razr 50 phones are designed to be slim and compact. The vanilla Razr 50 has a slim profile with dimensions of 171.3 x 74 x 7.3 mm when unfolded and 88.1 x 74 x 15.9 mm when folded, weighing just 188.4g.

For the design, Motorola opted for premium materials including a silicone polymer back with eco-leather finish, a stainless steel hinge, and an Air Nanoskin 6000 Series Aviation Aluminum middle frame, resulting in a sturdy build and a premium feel. This device folds in half along a hinge in the middle, which is designed to withstand repeated folding and unfolding.

When folded, the Razr 50 has a 3.6-inch cover display on the front that can be used to access basic functions without opening the device. In comparison, the Ultra model boasts a larger 4-inch cover display. This cover display uses an AMOLED display panel with a resolution of 382 x 720 pixels, offering clear and vibrant visuals.

Upon unfolding the 5G phone, there is a large 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED display with an 84.9% screen-to-body ratio, leaving thin bezels surrounding it. Thanks to the gapless sturdy hinge, the two halves completely lock together, resulting in a flat, expansive display. The front camera is discreetly hidden within a punch-hole in the top-center of the display, allowing for maximum screen real estate.

This camera setup also features several advanced features, including optical image stabilization (OIS) and phase detection autofocus (PDAF). It also features the Laser AF that uses a laser beam to measure the distance between the camera and the subject, allowing the camera to focus quickly and accurately, even in low light conditions. Although this chipset is lacking compared to the Dimensity 9000+ chipset that we saw in the Oppo Find N2 Flip, it offers impressive performance.

The CPU’s four Cortex-A78 cores are clocked at 2.5 GHz, providing snappy responsiveness and seamless multitasking, while the other four Cortex-A55 are clocked at 2.0 GHz. Accompanying this powerful CPU is a Mali-G615 MC2 GPU, dedicated to handling graphics-intensive tasks with finesse.

Additionally, the Motorola Razr 50 offers two configurations: 256GB of internal storage paired with 8GB of RAM, and 512GB of internal storage with 12GB of RAM. Both variants use UFS 2.2 storage technology, which provides fast read and write speeds, enhancing the overall performance and responsiveness of the device. However, the absence of a card slot means that users cannot expand the storage, so they will need to choose the appropriate storage capacity based on their needs.

On the software front, Motorola generally excels with its close-to-stock Android experience, and the Razr 50 follows suit with a version close to Android 14. The Android 14 builds upon the foundation of Android 13, bringing a host of improvements in privacy, performance, user experience, and developer tools, making it a significant upgrade for users and developers alike.

Additionally, the Motorola Razr 50 houses a smaller 4200mAh battery compared to the Razr 40’s 4300mAh battery. It also comes with the same 30W wired charging capability, however, the wireless charging has been upgraded to 15W.

For connectivity, this device comes with 5G connectivity for fast internet speeds, as well as Wi-Fi 6e, Bluetooth 5.3, and NFC. It also sports a USB Type-C Port (USB 2.0) for fast charging and wired communications.
