We have been using this smartphone for more than four weeks now and here is a detailed review of OPPO Reno5 F’s performance and why we think you should buy one. The 4G variant was used for the purpose of this review but the specifications are the same for the 5G variant except from connectivity.
Sleek Appearance and Attractive Design
Reno5 F is premium, elegant and simple when you talk about the phone design. It exhibits the matte and glossy texture that is glare free and soft to touch. With flowing light design, the colours are enhanced and depending on the angle of light, the phone exhibits additional colours. The fluid black colour comes with a smooth black gradient that changes from a darker to lighter black and other trendy colors.
The 3D curved back cover along with trendy colour choices (fluid black and fantastic purple) shows the amazing work put in by OPPO design team.
Reno5 F’s battery back is made with composite panels and can resist shattering or cracking when it falls. It weighs just 172g and has an overall thickness of 7.8mm which makes it one of the slimmest phones to be launched in 2021. Holding the phone was comfortable and very light to carry around, it can easily fit into your pocket.
The power volume is located to the right-hand side, volume button and a dual Nano-SIM with a dedicated micro-SD on the left-hand side, a 3.5mm audio jack, USB type C port for charging and a cavity-design single loudspeaker opening at the basement.
Display
The OPPO Reno5 F sports a 6.43- inches single hole-punch AMOLED display of 2400 x 1080p resolution. It has the standard 60Hz refresh rate which supports good immersive display, social media usage and gaming experience.
All day AI eye comfort feature of the device makes it possible to see the icons and text clearly under strong sunshine during the day and at night the screen brightness level is automatically lowered.
Camera
One of the features that keeps the OPPO Reno series ahead of its competitor is the camera. A single punch hole on the screen is home for the 32 MP selfie camera. The edges are 3D curved into the back and the entire front of the phone is glass.
The rear camera houses four lens the main lens with 48 MP, ultra-wide angle lens (2MP), macro lens (2 MP) and mono lens (2 MP). A single LED flash close to the rear cameras at the top left corner while OPPO branding at the bottom right corner.
We tested the Reno5 F camera performance in several conditions, locations, and using different camera modes and from all the shots the pictures all turned out to be sharp, clear and detailed.
When it comes to imaging, the 48MP shoot sharp and clear images especially with enough light. The Reno5 F ultrawide camera does a pretty good job with no distortion but focus on the background.
Using the camera was perfect in terms of image quality and when it comes to reading far away signs, post or even a vehicle plate number then the enhanced zoom camera is of great use.
Taking pictures at night wasn’t disappointing with the Night plus mode. Your hands need to be steady while taking pictures with the Night mode to get clear shots with bright images in low light.
The Reno5 F camera can shoot up to 4k videos and quality of video recorded using the rear camera is very clear. It comes with new features like the AI colour portrait video along with 10 different filters which is similar to the AI color portrait photo.
Enriching the Reno5 F filming experience is monochrome video that highlights only one of the three RGB colors (crimson, forest green and sky blue) in a video. This new video feature is supported only by the rear camera.
Another interesting feature is the dual view video that allows recording using the rear and front-facing camera. It comes with three layouts; split, round and oblong and great for content creators or hosts with guest during interviews.
OPPO’s electronic image stabilization (EIS) steady video feature is enabled manually before it can be used and ensures unique moments and footage recorded are captured and runs smoothly. The video resolution of the Reno 5F is 1080P/30fps.
Soloop
With Soloop, pictures saved in the gallery and video can easily be combined together into a shareable movie clip. You get free access to edit video by adding filters, music and subtitles to any video.
Performance overview, Software and Gaming test
In day-to-day use, the overall performance is impressive and did not lag or stutter during our testing period. The Reno5 F runs on MediaTek Octa-core processor MKT Helio P9 with an 8GB RAM. It comes with a 128GB onboard storage and supports expandable memory up to 256GB via an external memory card.
The Reno5 F runs smoothly while playing games and switching between apps. The phone kept all the apps and games running in the background for easy multitasking.
There is always a time when your phone slows down due to multiple apps, multitasking or continuous usage over time; but OPPO’s proprietary system performance optimizer improves the performance and reduces lag of the Reno5 F. This feature is very effective for the Reno5 F as it enhances the phone speed during startup, app download and playing games.
We played games like cover fire, angry birds 2 and rise of empires on the Reno5 F and the performance was top-notch…. it was a smooth gaming experience because the phone did not have any heating issue even while playing heavy games.
Reno5 F runs on Google’s latest operating system, Android 11 and backed the latest version of colorOS from OPPO – ColorOS 11.1. OPPO has improved user experience by upgrading the gaming, privacy and productivity features found on the latest OS. With OPPO’s flexdrop it is easy to switch easily between tasks.
Battery Performance
Aside the camera, another important feature of the OPPO Reno5 F is its 4310mAh battery that supports up to 30W of fast charging.
During our battery test, the phone lasted the whole day of watching movies, playing games, browsing on social media and listening to music with 10% left. Streaming music users can expect up to 18 hours of continuous playback and with fast charging means your device gets to charge in an hour.
Using the charger inside the Reno5 F box, the fast 30W flash charging took the device from 0 to 100% in less than 1 hour. Overcharging during the day or at night, damages the battery but with the OPPO battery guard your phone is protected. Really happy, OPPO didn’t use a 5,000mAh battery because with a 30 W fast charging to juice up your phone within an hour to full charge after using the device for a full day then the battery performance is okay.
Reno5 F super power saving mode gives you the option to adjust the phone performance and extend battery life. The super night standby mode limits battery usage at night.
Audio and Connectivity
Reno5 F comes with a cavity-design single loudspeaker and real HD sound based on Dirac. The single loudspeaker is quite loud and the audio quality is a bit okay but lacks the required bass.
OPPO share and nearby sharing allows you share pictures, documents, music with friends nearby.
In-display Fingerprint Scanner
Unlocking the Reno5 F is more secured with the OPPO’S In-display fingerprint unlock technology. The fingerprint sensor comes below the screen and recognizes the registered finger with speed and accuracy.
Verdict
The Reno5 F is an excellent device for the price it offers and with the upgrade in the camera department, design and performance shows that OPPO takes users feedback very seriously and improve on their next device before launch.
