Design
The iPhone 16 Pro maintains a similar look to its predecessor, the iPhone 15 Pro, but it comes with a few design tweaks that make it stand out.
The most noticeable change is the slightly larger 6.3-inch screen, compared to the 6.1-inch display of last year. The screen has slimmer bezels, which gives it a more modern and immersive feel.
It’s also tougher, with third-generation Ceramic Shield protecting the front, while the back uses a Corning-made glass panel. The whole phone is framed with titanium, compared to the aluminum frame of previous generations, which gives it a premium look and feel. This device also has a matte finish which reduces fingerprints, making it more resistant to smudges.
The iPhone 16 Pro is slightly bigger than the 15 Pro, measuring 149.6 x 71.5 x 8.3 mm, which makes it 3mm taller and 1mm wider. It’s also a bit heavier at 199 grams, but the weight feels well-balanced and not too heavy. The rounded corners make it comfortable to hold, and the overall feel is smooth, solid, and ergonomic in your hand.
On the back, the iPhone 16 Pro features a matte glass panel that’s smooth to the touch. The camera island stands out, housing three premium cameras, a LiDAR scanner, a flash, and a microphone. This square camera module is not too bulky but adds a sense of sophistication to the design.
One of the standout new features is the Camera Control button on the lower-right edge. It’s a small but functional addition, designed as a shortcut to open the camera app.
The button is more than just a shortcut—it also allows you to adjust camera functions like depth, exposure, and zoom with different presses, light presses, and swipes. This makes it much more useful than the usual camera shortcut button found on the lock screen.
On the left side of the phone, you’ll find the Action Button, which replaces the old mute switch. This customizable button offers access to 11 preset functions, making it easy to perform various tasks with just a tap, like launching the camera or turning on the flashlight.
Lastly, the iPhone 16 Pro is IP68-rated for dust and water resistance, meaning it’s built to withstand splashes and accidental submersions in water. The earpiece above the screen doubles as a speaker, offering a subtle yet practical design feature.
Display
Furthermore, the screen is larger than last year’s iPhone 15 Pro 6.1-inch display, the 16 Pro features a stunning 6.3-inch offering a resolution of 2622 x 1206 pixels, and the screen density clocks in at 460 pixels per inch, making everything from text to images appear crisp and vibrant.
This display is protected by the latest third-generation Ceramic Shield glass, which adds a layer of durability while maintaining the phone’s sleek design. The Dynamic Island at the top adds to the modern design of the iPhone 16 Pro.
It’s become a signature feature on recent iPhones, and it seamlessly integrates notifications, alerts, and interactive elements into the display, making them more accessible without taking up additional space. It also has slimmer bezels around the screen that further enhance the immersive experience, giving the iPhone 16 Pro a sleek and refined look.
The ProMotion technology enables a smooth 120Hz refresh rate, ensuring ultra-smooth scrolling and responsiveness when navigating through apps or web pages. This device also supports the Always-On display feature, which provides a more dynamic and visually engaging experience.
Additionally, the screen’s ability to adapt to ambient light is also a huge plus, thanks to True Tone adjustment, which automatically adjusts the white balance for more natural-looking colors in varying lighting conditions.
Apple claims a peak brightness of 2,000 nits under direct sunlight, making the screen easily readable in bright outdoor settings. For HDR content, the iPhone 16 Pro reaches a peak brightness of 1,600 nits, ensuring that HDR10 and Dolby Vision videos are displayed with stunning vibrancy and contrast.
Camera
The iPhone 16 Pro features a robust trio of cameras: a 48-megapixel primary, a 48-megapixel ultrawide, and a 12-megapixel telephoto. While the main camera stays largely the same as last year’s 48MP sensor, the ultrawide lens has received a major boost, and the telephoto camera now sports a 5x optical zoom, offering a range of new photographic possibilities.
The primary 48MP camera remains a core strength. It utilizes Apple’s second-generation “Fusion” sensor, which builds on the technology introduced in the iPhone 14 Pro. This sensor, now with a Quad Bayer arrangement, helps capture sharper images by dividing each individual pixel into four smaller sub-pixels.
This improves low-light performance and overall detail while ensuring accurate color reproduction. The 24mm wide-angle lens continues to provide excellent all-around shots, with an emphasis on rich textures and dynamic range.
The sensor’s enhanced computational photography features are what make the Fusion camera stand out, with Apple’s processing algorithms combining multiple exposures to deliver stunning photos regardless of the lighting conditions. This means photos are not only sharp but well-exposed, even in challenging situations.
The real leap this year comes with the ultrawide camera. Previously, the iPhone 15 Pro featured a 12MP ultrawide lens, but the iPhone 16 Pro stepped up with a 48MP sensor.
This marks a 4x resolution increase over the previous generation, and the new Quad Bayer sensor helps produce sharper, more vibrant wide-angle shots.
The 48MP ultrawide is particularly impressive in its ability to maintain high levels of detail across the entire frame, even in the most expansive landscape shots. It also brings significant improvements to macro photography, offering much more detail in close-up shots.
The lens has an incredibly wide 13mm focal length, making it ideal for capturing vast scenes, though you’ll have to be careful not to accidentally step into the frame when shooting.
Furthermore, the iPhone 16 Pro has a 12MP telephoto lens, which now benefits from a 5x optical zoom, up from the 3x zoom found in last year’s iPhone 15 Pro. The 5x optical zoom offers much more flexibility when zooming in on distant subjects, whether you’re trying to get closer to a far-off landmark or capturing intricate details from a distance.
The zoom is complemented by digital magnification up to 25x, which still delivers decent quality up to around 10-15x zoom, but beyond that, the image begins to lose sharpness. The 5x optical zoom, however, delivers stunning close-up shots with minimal degradation in quality, making it a standout upgrade over the iPhone 15 Pro.
One of the most innovative new features of the iPhone 16 Pro camera system is the addition of the Camera Control button, which offers a more intuitive and faster way to interact with the camera. This button, positioned on the lower-right edge of the phone, allows for quick access to the camera app and advanced settings.
A light press opens the camera, while a double press reveals a menu for adjusting exposure, depth, zoom, and other settings. Swiping on the button allows you to make adjustments to these settings in real time, while a full press takes a photo.
This simple yet powerful addition makes it faster and easier to take pictures, especially in fast-paced situations, while the tactile feedback of the button enhances the user experience.
Unlike previous touch-sensitive buttons, this one features a mechanical click, which can still be felt when the device is powered off—making it possible to operate the camera even when wearing gloves. This tactile feedback is also a great way to ensure accuracy while adjusting camera settings in difficult conditions.
The Camera Control button is not just about speed and convenience; it also enhances the overall photography experience. The button allows users to quickly switch between different camera modes, adjust settings on the fly, and take shots without navigating through menus.
Whether using the native camera app or third-party apps like Halide that support it, the Camera Control button significantly improves the responsiveness and ease of use of the iPhone’s camera system.
Additionally, the iPhone 16 Pro camera system is packed with useful features, including updated photographic styles, which let you modify the color, tone, and mood of your photos in real-time. You can choose from a variety of presets, such as vibrant, rich contrast, or cool tones, and adjust the intensity of the effect to suit your preferences. You can even create your own custom styles and apply them to future photos.
For those who prefer to shoot in raw formats, the iPhone 16 Pro offers Apple ProRAW support, which lets you capture images with minimal processing. This allows for more flexibility in post-processing, giving professional photographers and enthusiasts full control over their images. Night Mode and Portrait Mode are also included, making it easier to capture high-quality images in low-light conditions.
The iPhone 16 Pro also supports 4K Dolby Vision video recording at up to 120fps, allowing you to capture stunning, high-definition video with excellent color accuracy and dynamic range.
For videographers, the ProRes video recording and Log video recording features are also available, enabling more advanced video editing and a professional-grade video workflow. The “studio-quality” four-microphone setup ensures clear and detailed audio capture, making it ideal for high-end content creation.
In terms of video, the iPhone 16 Pro supports a range of resolutions and frame rates, from 4K at 24/30/60fps to 1080p at 25/30/60/120/240fps. With Dolby Vision HDR, ProRes support, and 3D spatial audio, the iPhone 16 Pro is a top-tier device for video production, making it a versatile tool for both casual users and professionals alike.
For selfies and video calls, the iPhone 16 Pro features a 12MP front camera with an f/1.9 aperture and optical image stabilization (OIS), ensuring sharp, bright, and clear selfies even in challenging lighting conditions. The front camera supports 4K video recording at up to 60fps, as well as HDR and Dolby Vision for high-quality video capture.
Hardware and Software
The iPhone 16 Pro, powered by Apple’s new A18 Pro chip, offers significant upgrades in both performance and efficiency, delivering an exceptional user experience. The A18 Pro is built on an advanced 3nm process, which not only enhances the chip’s speed but also improves power efficiency, ensuring that the iPhone 16 Pro can handle demanding tasks while maintaining impressive battery life.
It has a six-core CPU (two high-performance cores clocked at 4.05 GHz and four efficiency cores running at 2.42 GHz), designed to be 15% faster than its predecessor, the A17, while consuming 20% less power. This means users will experience quicker app launches, smoother multitasking, and faster processing, all without significantly impacting battery longevity.
Furthermore, the 6-core GPU inside the A18 Pro is another area of improvement. Apple claims a 20% increase in graphics performance, making it more than capable of handling graphics-intensive tasks such as gaming, video editing, and augmented reality apps.
The improved GPU also supports better frame rates and smoother graphics, offering a more immersive experience for media consumption and gaming enthusiasts alike.
Alongside the powerful A18 Pro chip, the iPhone 16 Pro is equipped with 8GB of RAM, available across all storage configurations—128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB.
This increase in memory from the 6GB found in previous models enables faster app switching, improved multitasking, and a more seamless experience overall.
Coupled with the new chipset, the RAM provides a more responsive, lag-free experience, whether you’re gaming, editing high-resolution photos and videos, or using intensive applications.
On the software side, the iPhone 16 Pro runs iOS 18, which brings a host of new features and customizations.
The update offers more ways to personalize the iPhone, such as dynamic widgets, customizable controls, and enhanced Live Activities that allow real-time updates on ongoing tasks or events.
Notable updates to the stock apps include improvements to Photos, Notes, and Maps, making them more powerful and intuitive.
iOS 18 also introduces a new password manager, RCS support for Messages, and expanded AI-based features, like smarter Siri and enhanced notification summaries.
One of the most exciting aspects of iOS 18 is the introduction of Apple Intelligence, which integrates AI across various apps to enhance functionality while maintaining the privacy Apple is known for. While some of the AI-driven features like the advanced emoji and image generators are not yet available, they promise to be exciting additions when they launch.
Battery life on the iPhone 16 Pro is impressive, with the device capable of lasting up to 16 hours and 50 minutes on a single charge.
This is thanks to the power efficiency improvements in the A18 Pro chip as well as the larger battery.
The phone is equipped with a 3582 mAh non-removable battery, which is optimized to last throughout the day even under heavy usage. When it’s time to recharge, the iPhone 16 Pro supports 25W wired charging with PD 2.0 (Power Delivery), which delivers 50% charge in just 30 minutes, making it one of the fastest charging iPhones to date.
For those who prefer wireless charging, the iPhone 16 Pro supports 15W MagSafe charging and Qi2 wireless charging at 15W.
Additionally, there’s reverse wired charging at 4.5W, which is useful for charging accessories like AirPods or the Apple Watch. The iPhone 16 Pro also offers 25W wireless charging in China, catering to local standards.
