The cost of internet access in the second quarter of 2012 was relatively stable. This is in line with the trend in the last few quarters. A few networks did introduce some new bundles while others had theirs revamped, most Nigerians with internet access did not notice any price changes. Etisalat, Airtel, and Swift Networks were among the networks with some activity in the quarter.
Etisalat added some high data plans to its internet line-up. The company introduced a 10GB, 15GB, and 20GB internet plans priced similarly as comparable internet plans from Glo at N10,000, N15,000, and N18,000 respectively. These new internet plans gives Etisalat a great position in the high data segment and puts their high-speed network to good use.
With this introduction Etisalat now competes with the likes of Glo Mobile, Swift Networks, and Visafone for best value in the high data segment.
Swift Networks updated a number of their internet plans. The Swift Liberty Plus had its data limit increased from 300MB to 500MB (66% increase) in the quarter. However, the price also went up from N1,500 to N2,000 (33% increase). The implication is that the overall value of the Liberty plus plan was increased making it a more attractive offering for low data consumers.
Swift Networks also increased the data limit of its Professional Internet Plan from 10GB to 15GB (50% increase), bringing it at par with similar bundle from Glo Mobile. Swift also added more data on its Value Plan, making it the best value internet plan on our list.
The Swift Value Internet plan had its data limit increased from 20GB to 30GB, still offered at N25,000 (N0.83/MB). Its Business and Family Plan also got more data allowance, increasing from 15GB to 23GB.
Glo had perhaps her worst quarter in terms of quality of service, with its internet network erratic almost throughout the quarter. It even went off completely for almost a week at some point in the quarter. Although Glo compensated consumers with extensions in validity period and now appear to be offering their usually above industry standard quality of service, we sincerely hope this will never happen again.
However, Glo mobile still has some of the sweetest internet browsing bundles in Nigeria, despite the fact that the company has not revamped its internet bundles for five straight quarters. Glo’s prices still appears to be the reference point in the industry with most networks aiming to match it.
