Planning to renovate your home in the near future, then you need to involve technologies that are environment-friendly and sustainable. There is a continuous global debate environmental issues like global warming. Natural resources are depleting by the day that we all need to make a pledge towards a healthier and environment-friendly home. Making changes for a better environment does not necessarily mean investing in expensive gadgets.

1. Declutter

Continuously and regularly declutter your home. You need to make space for the new, environment-friendly furniture for your house as well. Clutter would be furniture not being used, trinkets lying around etc. Always clear the clutter out of your house. Do not declutter one room and clutter the other in the process. Try to have a strategy and process in mind, which will give you the best result.

2. Reduce Reliance on Artificial Lighting

Light is one energy that we require daily. You need to have natural light coming into your home. Natural light has many health benefits – it keeps you happy, calm and healthy. It is known to regulate many diseases. Try not to obstruct such light.

For the night, you can swap to LED Bulbs.  They have proven to be cooler than incandescent lights and are less prone to breakage. It also provides brighter light and lasts for a longer time.

LEDs are energy efficient, safe and long lasting. Also, save electricity as much as possible. Switch off lights and fans when not in use and always unplug electronic items after a full charge.

3. Flooring

Flooring is an important aspect of any decor. You need to choose the flooring that suits the location you stay in. Some flooring can turn out to be toxic and not durable. There are many flooring that is environment-friendly to name a few:

  1. Rubber Flooring: Rubber flooring as the name suggests is made of rubber and usually found in gyms. They are gaining popularity currently as a flooring option for bathrooms and kitchens.
  2. Wool carpet: Wool is a natural product and it also purifies the air. Wool has the ability to ingest the toxic and harmful chemicals and does not re-emit them. This would be one of the go-to choices if you have a kid in your house.
  3. Linoleum flooring: Made of natural products – broken wood, linseed oil etc. This flooring is the best choice as it does not emit any toxic chemicals into the air, hence keep the air quality pure.
  4. Bamboo flooring: One of the most durable floorings and it is made of a natural substance – Bamboo. This flooring can be used in all parts of your home except the bathroom. The major disadvantage of bamboo flooring is water and humidity.
  5. Recycled glass and metal tile: glass and metal are the most recycled items and the flooring are made durable. The metal flooring is suitable for accent flooring used in most part of the home. The recycled glass tile is mainly used in bathrooms and kitchens. They are not suitable for the outdoor flooring.

4. Add some Plant

Add a little greenery in your home for some color. Plants are a natural source of oxygen. They purify the air naturally hence, you will not require any air purifying machine for the room. You can add decoration for the plants by DIY flower pots. Start your own organic kitchen just outside your kitchen or in your garden. You can use the kitchen waste as fertilizers. You can take one step towards organic eating as well.

5. Recycle

Believe in Reuse, Reduce and Recycle. Try to avoid plastics that are not degradable, hence reduce the use of such products. If you have any furniture made of wood, you can reuse the wood to make a furniture as per your requirement.

6. Air quality

Decrease incoming moisture, improve venting and seal off or exhaust undesired fumes and dirt. The best way to improve your home’s air quality is by choosing natural alternatives to paints, air fresheners, cleaning products, pesticides and furniture materials.

All the above pointers come in very handy even when you scout for a new furniture piece for your home. As you are on the road towards an Eco-friendly home you should always plan for the long term. You need to have durable furniture that is made out of wood.

You can have furniture of recycled and restructured wood, bamboo, recycled metal and plastic (that are all sustainable compared to other product materials used). Furniture made of natural products are highly durable, manageable and non-toxic, plus they can be easily repaired. Going green certainly does not need to cause a hole in your pocket.
