The Design
There is noticeable similarity between the Fitbit Charge HR and the earlier Charge in terms of look. It sports a tiny black OLED display that shows information such as time and steps taken.
There is a button at the side for lighting up the display to see this information. It features a rubberized band, with the strap attached using a buckle-like clasp similar to that of a standard watch. At the base is a bulging optical heart-rate monitor.
Fitbit Charge HR comes in small and large sizes and with a proprietary USB dongle for charging.
Heart Rate and Exercise Tracking
The heart-rate monitor that comes with the Fitbit Charge HR is its main improvement over the Charge. It provides 24-hour everyday tracking of your heart rate. The heart rate monitor features green LED lights, which flash as heart rate data is being gathered.
The heart-rate technology used is Pure Pulse – the same one used for the Fitbit Surge – which starts automatically once the device is worn on the wrist. That’s in addition to regular tracking of steps taken, elevation and intensity of exercise.
Fitbit Charge HR can automatically detect when you fall asleep and keep track of your heart rate. It lets you track individual exercise sessions as well. Holding down the side button starts a separate tracking, including of heart rate, for an exercise session.
The fitness band calculates average and peak heart rates as well as resting heart rate.
