Design
The Doogee S119 is a powerhouse built for adventure, hence the rugged design. The most catchy change of the device is the secondary display on the back. It sports a similar look to the Blackview BL9000.
This Android phone has a blocky design with a metal frame, a rubberized back, and reinforced corners. Although it weighs 368g, it is quite light for a rugged phone with a large battery size. It is 178.1 x 84.2 x 15.7 mm in dimension, so it’s a chunky phone. However, this is to be expected from a rugged phone built to withstand drops, shocks, and the elements.
The Doogee S119 is engineered to withstand harsh conditions with several robust design elements. Reinforced rubber corners enhance shock resistance and grip comfort, while secure port covers block water, dust, and debris.
The Doogee S119 has an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance and has been MIL-STD-810H certified, which means it can withstand shocks, vibrations, and extreme temperatures. This phone has no issue being submerged in up to 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes. It can also withstand high temperatures and high-pressure jets and operate in environments ranging from -4 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit.
On the front, the Doogee S119 sports a large 6.72-inch display that utilizes IPS LCD technology for good viewing angles and decent color reproduction. Thick bezels surround the screen on all sides, especially the bottom, resulting in just a 72.7% screen-to-body ratio.
On the rear, there is the round second screen, giving the phone a whole new, unconventional design. Although the screen integrated smoothly into the phone’s design, it is more like an actual, physical smartwatch embedded into the back of the phone.
This unique design lets users view notifications, control music, and perform other functions without unlocking the main screen.
Beside the circular module are the three cameras arranged on both sides, along with the night vision lenses and an LED flashlight.
Display
The Doogee S119 viewing experience is also quite good, thanks to its large 6.72-inch, 1080 x 2400, IPS, LCD display. It doesn’t have the most accurate colors, and it’s missing the punchy colors of an AMOLED, but it was nice and fluid thanks to its 120Hz refresh rate. The display is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus.
Furthermore, with a brightness of 600 nits, the display is bright enough to be easily readable even in direct sunlight. Additionally, it features the TUV SUD low blue light certification, which helps reduce eye strain, making it more comfortable to use the phone for extended periods. This display is also glove-friendly, working with some thicker gloves.
Camera
Doogee S119 has a robust camera system that covers a wide range of needs, especially for those who enjoy capturing everyday moments and more adventurous, outdoor experiences.
The 100 MP main camera is the highlight of this setup. With its f/1.8 aperture, the camera captures detailed, crisp images in a variety of lighting conditions. I found the resolution impressive, as the high megapixel count allows for sharp photos with plenty of detail, even when zoomed in.
Colors appeared vibrant and true-to-life in most scenarios, but there was some noticeable softness in lower-light situations, as the camera struggles to maintain detail in the shadows. However, the Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF) made focusing fast and accurate, even in dynamic scenes, making it easy to capture action shots or still-life photos without delay.
The 20 MP night vision camera is an exciting feature that sets the S119 apart from many other rugged smartphones. It uses infrared night vision technology, which I found incredibly useful when shooting in total darkness.
Whether you’re hiking at night or camping, the camera’s ability to capture clear images without any visible light source is impressive. It’s not going to replace a professional night-vision camera, but for casual use, it does a fantastic job.
The infrared night vision light provides just enough illumination to see objects or people clearly, although the images aren’t as crisp or detailed as those taken in good light. They are perfectly usable and a major plus for anyone who needs to shoot in dark environments.
The 5 MP ultrawide camera offers a broader field of view and captures images with a 120˚ angle. This lens is perfect for wide landscapes, large groups of people, or any situation where you want to fit more into the frame.
The wide-angle shots are good, but you’ll notice some softening around the edges of the frame, a typical trait of most ultrawide lenses.
In terms of lighting, the camera handles daylight well, but its performance dips in lower light, where distortion and noise start to creep in. Despite these drawbacks, it’s a fun lens to use when you want to capture everything in your surroundings.
For video, the Doogee S119 offers 1080p recording at 30fps. This is standard for a mid-range smartphone and works fine for most casual video recording needs.
The video quality is decent, with smooth playback and acceptable color reproduction, but the lack of advanced features like 4K or higher frame rates means it won’t compete with flagship phones in terms of video quality.
Still, the video results are good enough for general use, sharing on social media, or capturing family moments. The camera lacks advanced stabilization, so you might notice some shakiness for action shots or high-movement videos.
The 16 MP front camera is another solid feature of the S119. The camera captures crisp, well-defined images with natural skin tones for selfies. Thanks to the wide lens that accommodates more people in the frame, it’s great for individual selfies or group shots. The f/2.3 aperture works well in daylight but struggles a bit in low-light situations. While not as detailed as the rear cameras, the front camera performs admirably for casual social media posts or video calls.
Hardware and Software
Doogee S119 is powered by the Octa-core MediaTek MT8788 processor, which strikes an optimal balance between speed and energy efficiency. Combining high-performance cores, efficient cores, and a flagship GPU ensures smooth performance in demanding games and HD video processing.
The chipset is built on a 12 nm process, making it suitable for everyday tasks as well as light to moderate gaming. It houses an octa-core CPU, with four cores of Cortex-A73 clocked at 2.0 GHz for handling more intensive tasks, and four cores of Cortex-A53 running at the same speed for less demanding processes.
This setup helps maintain a smooth experience when juggling multiple apps or engaging in medium-heavy multitasking, like browsing the web while streaming video or editing photos.
Additionally, the processor is coupled with the Mali-G72 MP3 GPU, providing decent graphical performance for gaming and video rendering. While it’s not top-of-the-line for high-end gaming, it can handle many games at medium settings.
Titles that aren’t graphically demanding will run smoothly, but more intensive games like those with high-end 3D graphics might show some frame rate drops or stutter during intense action.
In terms of memory and storage, the Doogee S119 comes with 8GB of RAM, which is more than enough for general multitasking and allows you to run multiple apps without noticeable slowdowns.
The 512GB is massive for internal storage, providing ample space for apps, media files, and even larger game installations. You can expand storage further via the dedicated microSDXC card slot, which gives you the flexibility to increase capacity if needed, without sacrificing the use of another SIM card.
Meanwhile, the Doogee S119 runs on the Android 14 OS, offering seamless and intuitive operations. This software upgrade provides advanced features and enhanced security, delivering a smooth user experience.
The Affordable Android phone also features a massive 10200mAh battery paired with 33W fast charging technology, solving your battery anxiety once and for all. It will keep you powered up even during long outdoor adventures or extended work hours. It also supports 5W reverse wired charging.
Doogee S119 also boasts a comprehensive connectivity suite, including Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac for fast and reliable wireless internet access across dual bands. Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, GLONASS, BDS, and GALILEO satellite navigation systems are also available, as is NFC for convenient contactless transactions and data exchange. Meanwhile, users can also connect external devices via the versatile USB Type-C 2.0 port.
